About Us

QIB Extra is based at the Quadram Institute in Norwich, Norfolk


QIB Extra Ltd  provides a high quality strategic and applied research service to small and medium-sized companies as well as large multi-nationals in the food, diet and health and allied sectors. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Quadram Institute BioScience (QIB) with its headquarters on the Norwich Research Park.

With expertise in microbiology, model intestinal systems, authenticity and rheological investigations; QIB Extra Ltd will undertake bespoke applied food research, trouble-shooting and specialist analysis making QIB's expertise available and affordable to all companies. We can also provide access to world-leading experts on a consultancy basis.

We have our own laboratories, a dedicated management team and staff but can also call on the full range of expertise and resources of the Quadram Institute. We are able to put together multidisciplinary teams quickly which can be enhanced by the expertise and capabilities of our carefully selected partners on the Norwich Research Park and further afield.

We will undertake short-term applied food research, trouble-shooting and specialist analysis making QIB's expertise available and affordable to all companies. We can also provide access to food experts on a consultancy basis.  



The future is exciting.  The Quadram Institute is a new £multi-million state-of-the-art food and health research and endoscopy centre. The building has now been completed and QIB Extra have moved offices and laboratories. 

The Quadram Institute is the forefront of a new interface between food science, gut biology and health, developing solutions to worldwide challenges in food-related disease and human health.  It will bring together research teams from the Quadram Institute (QI), with others from the University of East Anglia, as well as the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals’ regional gastrointestinal endoscopy unit.





The Quadram Institute wil be engaged in fundamental and translational food and health research, alongside clinical studies, endoscopy and industry, working together to become a leading international hub for food and health research.  Scientific excellence will be combined with clinical expertise, delivering impacts on patient care and accelerating innovation.

The Quadram Institute will maximise the impact of the unique world-class bioscience cluster based at the Norwich Research Park, including the excellent plant and microbial science at the John Innes Centre and computational science and sequencing expertise at the Earlham Institute.

New test to combat buffalo mozzarella fraud uncovers mislabelled products

Scientists from the Quadram Institute on the Norwich Research Park have developed a test that differentiates between buffalo and cow’s milk, and between the cheeses made from them. Applying the test to commercial products, they found that many restaurant meals and supermarket pizzas claiming to be buffalo mozzarella are mislabelled, and instead contain mozzarella made wholly or partially from cows’ milk.
