Dr. Martin Webb - Lead Consultant Microbiologist
Publications
Dr Martin Webb leads our microbiology consultancy team at QIB Extra. With over twenty years of experience in the field, Martin is an authority on Clostridium botulinum, particularly in the areas of spore germination, outgrowth, and food challenge testing. After earning his PhD from the University of Liverpool, UK, Martin honed his expertise as a post-doctoral researcher at Westlakes Scientific Consulting and later joined Professor Mike Peck's research group at the Quadram Institute Bioscience. His research has helped advance the understanding of Clostridium botulinum physiology and strain variability. Since joining QIB Extra in 2018, Martin has played a central role in expanding our capabilities and reputation, making us a leading name in Clostridium botulinum challenge testing worldwide. As the lead Microbiologist and Consultant, Martin ensures the quality and accuracy of all findings and serves as the primary point of contact for clients.
Dr. Ida Porcelli - Microbiologist Consultant
Publications
Dr. Ida Porcelli brings a wealth of experience in Microbiology and Molecular Biology to QIB Extra, with over twenty years’ experience as a molecular microbiologist. Ida’s academic journey began with a degree in Biology from the University of Naples, Italy, followed by a DPhil in Biochemistry and Molecular Microbiology from the University of Oxford, UK. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute Pasteur (Paris), the Sir Dunn School of Pathology (Oxford), the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences (Newcastle upon Tyne), and at the Institute of Food Research (now QIB). Since joining QIB Extra in September 2022, her extensive knowledge and research background have been invaluable to our team.
Kirsty Holmes - Microbiologist Consultant
Kirsty Holmes joined QIB Extra in 2017, bringing over 22 years of experience in the food industry. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Plant Biology from Sheffield University, Kirsty has excelled in roles across Quality Assurance, Technical, Hygiene, and as an industrial microbiologist. Before QIB Extra, Kirsty managed internal Chemistry and Microbiology laboratories at Bernard Matthews Ltd., overseeing a wide range of nutritional and microbiological tests. Her expertise includes method development, validation, and problem-solving in microbiological issues within food production. Kirsty’s hands-on experience and technical acumen make her a vital asset to our team.
